About the Company:

At Valur, we are on a mission to democratize tax strategies that have traditionally been reserved for the ultra-wealthy. Similar to how Roman Health and Hims revolutionized access to healthcare, we are building the system to streamline complex tax planning tools — making them smart, simple, and accessible to everyone.

We started by simplifying the creation and management of irrevocable trusts, and today we offer a full suite of solutions to address capital gains, income, and estate and gift tax obligations. Our proprietary platform delivers real-time tools and education, enabling individuals and their advisors to evaluate, select, and implement best-in-class tax mitigation strategies — from trust-based solutions to investments in tax-advantaged renewable energy projects.

The proof is in the results: We have scaled quickly to 7-figures of annual revenue with under 20 team members, and we have partnerships with some of the top investment advisory firms in the business. Given that traction, we have raised money from a group of top early-stage investors, including Vibe Capital, Box Group, Canaan Partners, BasisSet, and notable angels. As demand accelerates, we are expanding our team to help more individuals preserve and grow their wealth.

Our Values:

  • Customer Centricity: Our job is to be our customer’s best partner.
  • Ownership: Everyone here is an owner. We identify problems and solve them.
  • Growth: We’re never satisfied; we aim to be better every day.
  • Urgency: We prioritize the highest-impact work and solve it now.

About this role:

We are hiring a Head of Estate Planning. Valur is a startup, so no two days are alike. But in general, this will look something like an even split between high-stakes client service and product innovation. You’ll be our in-house subject-matter expert, but more of the job is to scale your expertise so we can help thousands of high-net-worth clients, from newly wealthy tech founders and employees to established families, as they build their net worth and navigate their legacy.

In other words, this isn’t a traditional practitioner’s role where you’ll sit in an office and draft or review documents, or even advise clients in a straightforward way. We’re looking for a builder — someone who is excited to work with us to invent new product workflows in the morning and explain QSBS stacking to a tech founder in the afternoon.

As our Head of Estate Planning, you will directly shape our product strategy, contribute to the creation of educational materials, and build partnerships with financial advisors, CPAs, and non-profits. Leveraging your deep estate planning expertise, you will be integral in enhancing existing products and guiding strategic initiatives that influence the growth trajectory of Valur. As our estate planning subject matter expert, you will drive in-depth client engagements, collaborating closely with sales, client success, and operations teams. You will lead technical conversations with clients and partners to help articulate estate planning solutions.

If you're interested in the position, please send a couple of paragraphs describing how you think technology and AI will change estate planning for high net worth families.

What You'll do:

  • Advisory Lead. Guide prospects and clients through complex income tax, capital gains, and estate tax planning strategies, including GRATs, SLATs, IDGTs, CRUTs, Crummey Trusts, ILITs, and others. Here, you’ll be helping people build a deep understanding of the strategies we offer and moving them toward action.
  • Product Builder. Partner with the product and engineering teams to translate your expertise into intuitive user journeys. You’ll help decide which strategies we build next and how they should function in-app.
  • Communicator. Create educational content that doesn't feel like a law school textbook. You’ll find creative ways to make sophisticated tax strategies accessible and persuasive, on the page and in person.
  • Internal Expert. Serve as an internal resource for the team on estate planning structures, tax law updates, and best practices.
  • Strategic Growth Catalyst. Act as the technical bridge for our sales and client success teams, helping close complex deals and building trust with external partners (CPAs, RIAs, and Family Offices).

Who You Are:

  • Lawyer And… You likely spent time in a T&E practice but realized that pure client service wasn’t for you. You might have moved to a family office or a boutique advisory firm because you prefer to explore the why, help persuade clients, and fit advanced tax strategy into a broader set of financial goals.
  • Creative Technical Expertise. You have a deep knowledge of U.S. estate, gift, and generation-skipping transfer tax law, as well as the implementation and design of complex trust structures. But you also understand the emotional side of wealth building. You can talk numbers and legal technicalities, but you can also address a client’s fraught family situation.
  • Entrepreneurial & Dynamic. You’ve probably had a side project or spent time trying to optimize the way your previous firms worked. You thrive in fast-paced environments, embrace ambiguity, and enjoy building from the ground up. You’re excited to help shape and improve what Valur does.
  • Persuasive Communicator. You can explain intricate planning concepts clearly to clients and advisors. You can pivot from talking shop with a 28-year-old founder to discussing multi-generational legacy planning with a late-career executive.

Qualifications:

  • J.D. required; LL.M. in Taxation is a plus, but your track record matters more.
  • Mid-career: 4+ years of experience in estate planning, trust administration, or private client services
  • Alternative paths: Experience in a family office, multi-family office, or small financial advisory firm is highly valued. We love candidates with non-linear resumes.
  • Tech fluency: Comfortable working in a fast-paced, remote-first, tech-forward, early-stage environment, with a high degree of independence and hands-on mentality.

What We Offer:

  • An opportunity to play a critical, highly visible role in a rapidly growing company
  • A collaborative, high-velocity, supportive team environment
  • Fully remote roles and significant career growth opportunities
  • Competitive salary + significant stock options
