Role Summary
We’re looking for a Director, Corporate Controller to lead Apartment List’s accounting and payroll operations, financial reporting, and tax oversight. Reporting to the VP of Finance, this leader ensures the accuracy and integrity of our financial statements while building scalable accounting processes that support the company’s continued growth.
This role is both strategic and hands-on. You’ll oversee the monthly close, payroll, technical accounting, and corporate tax compliance while partnering closely with Finance, Legal, and external advisors. You’ll also lead and develop a team of four accounting professionals responsible for general ledger, revenue recognition, financial reporting, and tax operations, helping build a high-performing accounting function that supports strong decision-making across the business.
Here’s what you’ll do as part of the team
- Lead the accounting organization, including general ledger, equity, payroll, revenue recognition, financial reporting, and tax compliance
- Oversee the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes to ensure accurate and timely financial statements
- Own technical accounting matters, including revenue recognition (ASC 606), lease accounting (ASC 842), equity accounting, and other complex transactions
- Manage corporate tax strategy and compliance, including international tax matters such as transfer pricing and intercompany accounting across global entities, including Israel
- Oversee entity-level accounting and consolidation across multiple legal entities and sets of books, ensuring accurate reporting across the organization
- Manage sales tax compliance and automation using Anrok, partnering with Finance and external advisors to ensure accurate reporting and filings
- Strengthen and scale accounting processes, systems, and internal controls to support company growth and operational efficiency, including leveraging AI and automation to streamline workflows, reduce manual processes, and improve reporting accuracy
- Lead the annual audit process and manage relationships with external auditors
- Hire, develop, and mentor a high-performing accounting team while fostering a culture of accountability, ownership, and continuous improvement
Here are the skills and experience you’ll need to be successful
- You have 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership roles in corporate accounting or controllership
- You have strong expertise in corporate tax compliance and tax strategy, including corporate tax provisions and sales tax compliance
- You have deep knowledge of GAAP, technical accounting, and financial reporting standards
- You have experience leading and developing accounting teams in fast-growing or technology-driven organizations
- You have successfully managed audits and implemented strong internal controls in a complex business environment
- You have strong systems and process orientation, with experience improving accounting workflows or financial infrastructure
- You have the ability to translate complex financial topics into clear insights for cross-functional partners and leadership
- You have experience with treasury - Cash management, cash forecasting, debt covenants, debt refinancing etc
- You have a CPA or equivalent accounting certification (strongly preferred)

Here's the Pay Range:
At Apartment List, we carefully consider a variety of factors to determine compensation for each position, including the role, level, and work. The US Total Target Compensation (TTC) for this position is:
- Zone 1: $172,700 – $209,000 TTC + Equity
- Zone 2: $159,700 – $193,000 TTC + Equity
- Zone 3: $146,800 – $177,000 TTC + Equity
This reflects the compensation target for new hire salaries for the position across all US locations. Please note, the compensation details provided do not include benefits and perks that we offer.
We also rely on market indicators along with considering your work location, job related skills, experience and relevant education and training, to determine compensation that is fair and competitive for you. Apartment List will consider paying compensation near the higher of the range in exceptional circumstances, where candidates have the experience, credentials or expertise that would warrant such consideration.
